Methane emissions in the European Union 1990-2022
Methane (CH4) emissions in the European Union (EU-27) were equivalent to 464 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂e) in 2022. Since 1990, the EU-27 has slashed its annual CH4 emissions by almost 40 percent. CH4 is a potent greenhouse gas that is produced by a variety of sources, but the largest source of EU-27 CH4 emissions is the agriculture sector.
