In 2018, 145 million chocolate Santas were produced for the holiday season. The amount has changed little during the time period specified. Chocolate Santas are a popular Christmas treat and gift in Germany. They are also still sold in January, after the Christmas holidays, often at a discount.
Sweet tooth
When looking at EU chocolate production, Germany was the EU’s biggest chocolate producer, ahead of Italy and France. It was also among the world’s leading chocolate consumers, along with Switzerland and Ireland. Milka, Lindt and the national source of pride Ritter Sport were the most popular chocolate brands among consumers, also in terms of brand awareness.Christmas spending
Revenue from retail sales during Christmas in Germany have only been growing in recent years, amounting to over 99 billion euros in 2018. Shoppers were keen and retailers both online and off even more so.
