Nuclear waste present in France 2021, by level of radioactivity
In 2021, the volume of radioactive waste stored or to be stored in France was around 1.8 million cubic meters. Over one million of them were of low-to-intermediate or very low radioactivity and required short-term management. The remaining eight percent of the total nuclear waste present on the French territory in 2021 had a lifetime of hundreds of thousands of years. France is currently developing the project of a deep geological disposal facility to store high-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste.
