Share of votes won by the Democratic Party 2008-2022
The Democratic Party (PD) was founded in 2008, representing the main center-left party in the country's political spectrum. After having initially collected more than 30 percent of the votes, PD settled around 25 percent of the consensus between 2009 and 2013. In the 2014 European election, the center-left faction earned almost 41 percent of the votes under the leadership of the former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, recording the best result for a single party since 1948. Thereafter, the list suffered from a deep consensus crisis, loosing more than half of the votes won in 2014. Currently, PD represents the main opposition party to Giorgia Meloni's government.
