The Permian Basin in West Texas is the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. In 2022, operations on the oil and gas basin released an estimated 216 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) into the atmosphere. The 10 biggest GHG emitters in the United States produced more than 700 MtCO₂e. Eight of these polluters were oil and gas fields, while two were road networks in urban areas.
