Verified emissions under EU ETS 2023, by select activity
The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) covers the emissions from many activities, such as cement production and aviation. In 2023, fuel combustion, mainly from the power sector, was responsible for the highest emissions among all activities covered by the EU ETS, at 605 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). The refining of mineral oil produced the second-highest emissions that year, at 104 MtCO₂e.
