Direct health insurance premiums written in the U.S. 2015-2022, by type
In 2022, the vast majority of direct health premiums written by the U.S. health insurance industry related to expenses for Medicare and Medicaid. Together, these accounted for over 650 billion of the more than one trillion U.S. dollars in direct premiums written for that year. The combined total of individual and group comprehensive private health insurance was less than Medicare or Medicaid spending alone, however, at around 260 billion U.S. dollars.
