Population natural increase in Italy 2002-2023
Between 2002 and 2023, the natural increase was negative and steadily declined. Hence, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births. In 2020, the population increase stood at a negative rate of 5.6 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and settled around 5 in the following years. In 2023, 6.4 children were born per 1,000 inhabitants, three infants less than in 2002.
