Apparel market in Finland - statistics & facts

In recent years, the apparel market in Finland recorded a decrease in production. Since 2011, the number of apparel manufacturing enterprises has declined in the country. A decade ago, over one thousand enterprises operated in that field, while in 2020 the number declined to 890. In the same year, the production value of apparel manufacturing in Finland decreased by around seven percent. Nevertheless, in recent years, the industry has recorded a significantly higher production value than before 2013. The consumer price index (CPI) of clothing remained relatively stable over the past decade, with a slight decrease. As of 2022, the CPI increased for the first time in the observed time period, amounting to 99.58, where the base year 2010 equals 100.

The revenue of the Stockmann Group increased in 2022

One of the best-known retailers for clothes in Finland is Stockmann. Stockmann plc was established in 1862 and owns several Stockmann department stores across Finland and the Baltics. Along with Stockmann, the Swedish fashion brand Lindex is part of Stockmann plc. After surpassing one billion in revenue in 2018, the revenue of the Stockmann plc declined until 2020. The earnings have increased again in recent years, getting close to one billion euros in 2022.

Finnish clothing imports increased in 2022

While the export value as well as the import value of apparel and clothing accessories declined over the past years, this trend stopped in 2022. While the value of imported apparel articles amounted to almost two billion euros, exports reached almost 350 thousand million euros. This phenomenon can also be observed in the Finnish leather and fur trade. Both the import value and the export value of leather and dressed fur showed an overall decline. However, in 2022, both trade figures reached a peak for the observed time period. The export value of leather and fur reached 30.6 million euros, staying behind the import value of over 56 million euros.

Fashion e-commerce in Finland

Online shopping is more popular than ever in Finland, and that includes buying clothes. The positive attitude towards online shopping reflects in the forecast online fashion market revenue in Finland, which is expected to constantly grow in the upcoming years. In 2022, the leading online fashion store in Finland was zalando.fi, having generated nearly 157 million U.S. dollars from sales of fashion articles across the country. The Swedish-based multinational clothing company H&M, with its online store hm.com, ranked second.
