Number of petroleum stations in Malaysia 2017, by brand
Petronas as a governmental funded Malaysian oil company
Petronas was founded in 1974 and slowly made its way to become one of the largest oil companies in Asia. The oil company mainly produces in Sudan even though most western oil companies have withdrawn their investments from this country due to the difficult political situation and the Darfur conflict. This strategy resulted in an operating revenue of about 250 billion Malaysian ringgit as of 2018, of which the domestic market accounted for 62 billion ringgit .
Are there any competitors on the Malaysian market
Despite the great political and economic market power of Petronas in Malaysia, some players were able to establish themselves on the domestic market. The even larger oil company Shell , for example, ranked second with only 115 petroleum stations less than Petronas. However, Shell is more successful in the neighboring countries such as in Thailand and the Philippines.
