Premature deaths related to air pollution in Belgium 2021, by pollutant
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is amongst the most fatal air pollutants worldwide. In 2021, exposure to PM2.5 concentrations above WHO guidelines was attributable to more than 5,000 premature deaths in Belgium. Meanwhile, exposure to high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) led to an additional 1,400 premature deaths in the European country that year.
