While the causes of the environmental disaster on the Kamchatka were still unknown, 70 percent of Russians believed that it could be a consequence of the water pollution caused by human activity rather than a result of natural processes, such as presence of toxic algae, according to a survey from October 2020. The ecological catastrophe was recorded on the Kamchatka peninsula located in Northeastern Russia in September of that year, when dead sea animals were found on the shore, the water changed its color and smell, and beach visitors reported health issues.
