German consumer prices for dairy products and eggs increased in recent years. In 2022, the consumer price index was 138.5, which means that, compared to 2015 as a baseline comparison year, prices had increased by 38.5 percent. The ongoing energy crisis has put a strain on Germany's dairy industry, causing rising prices just like with other food products. Producer prices for milk had also increased significantly compared to earlier. Also in 2022, the producer price index showed 180, hence prices had jumped by 80 percent. The producer price index records the development of prices paid to producers for the goods they provide.
The list of dairy products on offer in Germany is a long one. Per capita consumption varied, though a few trends were still visible. Fresh dairy products were consumed the most, with these including milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, as well as condensed milk, to make a few examples. Cheese was among the most favored by German consumers as well. The milk and dairy substitute market is also of importance in Germany, not just for the lactose intolerant, but due to the development of vegan consumption in the country.
